For years, automakers have been working to reduce in-vehicle distractions. In fact, automakers worked with a wide range of experts to develop the first set of distraction principles in 2000 and guidelines in 2006: the Driver Focus Telematics (DF-T) Guidelines.

Hands on the Wheel and Eyes on the Road

Manufacturers also provide technology that pairs consumers’ hand-held devices to the vehicle. This reduces visual-manual distraction from these devices and permits manufacturers to provide much of the device’s functionality into voice commands and outputs so that drivers can keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
