Detroit Free Press — Last year, automakers announced a voluntary commitment to tackle child hot car deaths.
It followed a stretch of 10 deaths in 20 days across the country over the summer, marking a particularly gruesome stretch for a problem that has become more pronounced, with hundreds of children dying in sweltering vehicles in the last two decades.
The pledge to make rear seat reminder systems standard equipment on almost all passenger vehicles sold in the United States by 2025 was announced by two different automotive trade associations, which, as of this week, will become one — the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.
